Glossary: Anneal: Allowing the glass to gradually cool from the
inside out to prevent fractures. Aventurine: Glass that contains copper flakes that give
the appearance of gold. Cane: Latticino and filigrana design glass that has been
pulled out into a long rod. Dichroic Glass: Specially coated glass used as decorative
additions in art glass. After extensive cleaning, glass is placed
in a heated vacuum chamber. In the chamber the surface of the
glass is blasted with an electron beam gun, which coats the glass
with different metallic oxides and rare metals to create different
patterns and color effects. Two different types of base glass
are used in the process. When used in the first or transparent
state, both reflected and transmitted light frequencies are emitted.
In the second phase a dichroic coating on a black background makes
the surface color reflect. Unique colors are reflected and transmitted
like teal or champagne, and the thin coatings of metals simulate
precious metal qualities like those of copper, gold, platinum
or silver on the dichroic surface. Double Trouble: Starting with a single piece
of filigrana cane, James suspends the cane in the center and swirls
it up towards the top. Half way in to the swirl, the direction
is been reversed. Filigrana: Colored glass encased by clear glass which
has been pulled into a piece of cane. Fourplay: Design created by glass artist James
Alloway that uses four centered pieces of James cane designs,
dropping them from the top to the base. Primarily used in James
marble creations. Gaffers Revenge: Design created by glass artist
James Alloway. A clear center is covered with nothing but different
pieces of James various cane designs. The beauty of dichroic glass
has been included in many of the different cane patterns, providing
a beautiful glistening effect. Glory Hole: A heated chamber to maintain glass temperature
and reheat glass. Iridize: Metallic surface coating for glass. Latticino: Cane that gives the appearance of lattice.
Lattigrana: Design creation by glass artist
James Alloway which is his interpretation of combining a filigrana
design with a latticino design. Primarily used in James marble
creations. Millefiore: Cane that contains a floral motif. Murrine: Cane that has been configured, stretched, heated,
and cut in half to create an image. PS Vortex: Design created by glass artist
James Alloway. James creates his own various colored stringer,
alternating the different colored pieces and swirling them from
the center of the side to the base leaving the center open. PS Vortex II: Same as PS Vortex
except the base is closed instead of open. Parallel Universe: Design created by glass
artist James Alloway, incorporating a liner color and then swirling
two adjacent pieces of stringer down from the top to the base
of the piece parallel to each other. Portland Dichrodelic: Design created by glass
artist James Alloway. Starting with the Stardust design,
James then incorporates his own creations of murrine, stringer,
millefiori, latticino and filigrana. Most of the cane that James
uses in this design also contains dichroic glass providing a glistening
effect. Portland Psychedelic: Design created by glass
artist James Alloway that incorporates his own creations of shards,
murrine, stringer, millefiori, latticino, and filigrana. Dichroic
glass glistens throughout the many layers providing additional
depth to the coloring effect. Powder: Colored glass that has been pulverized into a
fine powder. Shards: Colored blown glass that has been broken into
chunks and then added for additional coloring or decoration. Split Personality: Design created by glass
artist James Alloway. James uses his own cane creations, placing
two pieces back to back in the center. Primarily used in James
marble creations. Stardust: Design created by glass artist James
Alloway that starts with a base of colored powder which James
covers with bands of glistening dichroic glass. The dichroic glass
is swirled from the top to the base. Stringer: Thin colored thread or string of glass. Supernova: Design created by glass artist
James Alloway. James incorporates his own creations of latticino,
stringer and millefiore, swirling these pieces together with airtrap
bubbles following along one side of the colored swirl. Dichroic
glass glistens throughout the different levels of layering. Supernova II: Same as Supernova
except with both sides of center swirl having an airtrap bubble
pattern. Supernova III: Same as Supernova
but without any airtrap bubbles 3 Way Divide: Design created by glass artist James Alloway that uses three pieces of James cane creations dropping from the top to the base. Primarily used in James marble creations. |
